Four Cylinder Club of America History Project

Here is featured the program from an event called the Sports CARnival.  The program is full of fascinating period advertising and articles about the organizations and events of the day.  Sports CARnival was an event held at Devonshire Downs in the San Fernando Valley to support Valley Presbyterian Hospital in Van Nuys.  The San Fernando Valley Chapter of the Four Cylinder Club of America took the lead in organizing this event.  It had huge support from many notables, including Verne Smith, Cornel Wilde, Jackie Cooper, E. Forbes Robinson, Howard Swift, Bob Drake, Jack McAfee, Art Lauring, Harry Morrow, Bill Pollack, Ben Alexander, Andy Devine, Keenan Wynn, and Bob Peterson.  Cars advertised included Hillman, Cadillac, BMW Isetta, Triumph, Jaguar, Renault, DKW, English Ford, Borgward, Sumbeam Talbot, Goliath, Alfa Romeo, MGA, Mg Magnette, Renault, Chevrolet, Simca, AC, Mercedes-Benz, Austin A50, Austin Healey, Oldsmobile, Volkswagen, Porsche, Morris, Citroen, and Buick.  Car clubs involved included the California Sports Car Club (Cal Club), Marquardt Aircraft Sports Car Club, the Classic Car Club, and the Four Cylinder Club of America.  Many of the Los Angeles area car dealers of the day advertised in the program, including Casa de Cadillac, Holiday Motors, Isetta of Beverly Hills, Nick Pastor, Peter Satori, Murphy Imports, Frank Millard Sports Cars (The Man in Red), Ballard West Valley Oldsmobile, Earl C. Anthony, Michelmore Motors, Henry S. Perren, Brentwood Motor Company, Coventry Motors, Woolverton Motors, Burbank Sports Car Center, European Motor Co. Ltd., Millikan Chevrolet, Bones Hamilton Buick, Jack McAfee Motors, Speedway Quarter Midget Sales, and Ben Alexander Ford.  Many organizations were involved, including the Panorama Quarter Midget Association, Las Patronicitas Guild, Independent Order of Foresters Robin Hood Band, Le Cercle Concours d’Elegance, and the Boy Scouts of America, Knights of Dunamis.  The program is a fascinating trip to another era.  Have fun looking at it.   Thanks to Bob Foster for donating this to the FCCA History Archive.
