Hi Gene. I do have some information on the Jerome event. A friend of mine was visiting Jerome and noticed a display in a Historical Society display. My friend expressed interest in the display and subsequent to that, the Historical Society sent my friend an envelope with copies of programs and other papers.

Back in the late 60’s and maybe the early 70’s, I went on several time & distance car rallies here in Phoenix put on by the Phoenix Rally Organization.
Do these time & distance rallies still exist or have they disappeared?
    Thx!

Sorry for the extremely slow reply. I’m supposed to be notified of comments, but for some reason this has not happened for over a year! Time and distance rallies are still conducted, but not as frequently as they were back in the 1950s or 1960s. The Santa Monica (California) Sports Car Club hosts rallies. At one time this club was a chapter of the Four Cylinder Club of America.

I was a member of the Phoenix Rally Organization in Phoenix, AZ from its founding in the late 1960’s until I moved out of the area in 1972. It was a very good group of people, very knowledgable in TSD rallying. The club staged monthly ‘First Friday Nighter’ rallies, and other periodic events on the fifth Friday night (evenings) of months that had a fifth Friday. The events were usually well-attended. Since returning to Phoenix last year, I had hoped to get involved in TSD rally events again. Sadly, those don’t seem to exist any longer in Phoenix or AZ.

      Hi April

As far as I know, the Phoenix Rally Organization is no longer in existence. Rallying in general has fallen off considerably from what it was in the 1950s and 1960s.

I was a member of the Phoenix Rally Organization when it stopped holding events in 1994. Eric Anderson, a CPA in Tempe, has all the old checkpoint equipment we used when we ended rallies. If there is any interest in having events again, please contact me since I have equipment to measure an event. Regards, John Getchell

      Hi John

As you know, sadly, rallying is not nearly as popular as it was back in the 50s through 70s. The Glendale chapter of the FCCA gave me its timing equipment several years back. It ceased to be an active club around the same time as your PRO group ended. Locally, the Santa Monica Sports Car Club still does regular rallying.

I was a member and participated in numerous Phoenix FCCA Rallies and was Rally Master for one First Friday Nighter. I still have several trophies from the late 60’s when my father and I won the non-mechanical category in his ’64 Ford Falcon convertible. I have Dad’s Falcon and the rally equipment I bought. The circular Stevens Rally Indicator and Heuer stop watch. Plus two Plexiglas clip boards with 12 volt goose neck lights that I built to hold the rally instruction and my Time distance spread sheets.
I also still have my ’57 MGA with which I entered many First Friday Nighters with a date and Saturday slaloms. The dash is covered with FCCA dash plaques from rallies, slaloms and hill climbs. The MGA carried me to many Phoenix hill climbs in Clifton, Morenci and Sedona. The Jerome hill climb ended prior to my joining the FCCA, but I did see many home movies of the event shown at the end of club meetings.

Thanks for sharing your experiences with the Phoenix FCCA. That was the most active chapter outside of California.

I ran across this site by accident so here is my 2cents. I ran the 1st Friday niters and the 5th Friday niters from 1971 to 1977. I had a 69 MG midget and ran mechanical class with my Zeron 440 rallye computer. Lots of fun. During that time I was a member of the Phx FCCA. We would put n the Millie Misery (500 mile over nite) Rallye yearly occasionally a Sunday evernt and also the Clifton Hill Climb. Also did some time for SCCA races at PIR when they still had a road course track. To bad thing change was good times and good people.

Thanks for your feedback. The Phoenix chapter was among the most active in the FCCA. That era was probably toward the end of the hardcore rally days.
